OFF TOPIC: Path for 12 year old to learn how to program iPhone

I note that several of you are IT professionals, thus this post in which I seek your guidance.

We have a clever 12-year old who is interested in learning how to write iPhone applications. My goal is to map out the educational path for him. I am not a Mac person and have not done serious coding since college (early 1980s), so I am starting my plan from scratch.

I considered getting him started on Liberty BASIC (isn't that how we all learned programming?), but I have heard that BASIC may not be the best approach. He has started playing with Microsoft's Kodu, but that seems way too high level.

So, what path should we take which will eventually lead to his being able to write apps for the iPhone?
