Excellent review, and hard to disagree with any of your assessments. I bought the first team in the Calcutta auction and immediately took the 3-person team of Raposa, Karen Davis, and Bill Davis. Bill and Karen have proven to both be very tough, but the clincher was Raposa as his results and PR clearly make him a candidate for future Giant voting. (The verdict is in about the belt line club...no more debate about the toughest club in the U.S.)
You said you thought Ed and Petko were the two best players, and you're probably right, but I'm not sure you got the order right...but it's close. I am proud to say that I beat them both in the main event, and though I didn't win the tournament, I sure feel like a winner defeating those two.
You also didn't mention some other great players, most notably, Coolrey, who was doing great until midnight Saturday and then the wheels came off.
Even though I owned Frank in the Calcutta, I was happy to see Jeb win the finals. He made a great comeback in the final match and never gave up hope or lost his cool. After I congratulated him, he commented that he had a very lucky tournament. NOBODY EVER WON without a lot of luck, but Jeb has won too many events and played too well to write it off to luck...he deserved the victory and because he's one of the "good guys" who give a lot back to the game and bring good sportsmanship and fellowship to every event, it's great to see him win.
It was a great tournament and the venue was excellent. I only have one critique, or recommendation. During the dinner break the directors and many of the players decided to go to a restaurant quite far away from the tournament. My group was supposed to follow, but I strongly recommended we go closer because I didn't want to rush and I was afraid of being late returning from the dinner break. So we went to a nice little place close by and got back in plenty of time...in fact, I got a little nap in before the next round.
But the folks who used poorer judgment came back very late. They should have each received a penalty point (maybe two--I'm not exactly sure how late they were).
This idea of being "friendly" and "nice" to each other is great, so if that is the approach, then don't have rules that state there are penalties for being late. Eliminate that rule, by the way, and let's see how much fun and friendly tournaments are when people start showing up a half hour or more late for their matches.
I believe the directors should apply the rules strictly and fairly on everyone, PARTICULARLY when they, themselves, are involved. There were many people who had to wait for their match, and yes, waiting an extra 15 or 20 or 30 minutes is not the end of the world, but it is inconsiderate to make them wait and it is unsettling and it might affect their play and enjoyment of the event. The fact that there was a large group and the traffic was bad is no excuse. My definition of "people friendly" and "good sportsmanship" includes following and applying the rules and taking your medicine when you don't.
Please don't think this leaves me with a negative feeling about the event....it was a great tournament and well-run otherwise, and I'm very glad I was there, and I would encourage everyone to try to make it to Atlanta next year.
