Tiger -- details

In Response To: Tiger -- details (Chuck Bower)

Officials were made aware of the potential violation by a television viewer who called in. They reviewed the video of the drop while Woods was playing the 18th hole and determined he had complied with the rules.

I think it would be more accurate to say that the officials did not have sufficient evidence to conclude that Tiger had failed to comply with the rules. There was no official determination one way or the other.

Woods was not disqualified, however, since officials had initially reviewed the incident.

"Under Rule 33-7 there was ample reason not to impose the penalty of disqualification," Ridley said. "Committees make mistakes sometimes. I think he’s entitled to protection."

I wouldn't call this a "mistake" -- the Committee did the best with what they had at the time. That's why it is up to the player to call his own violation of the rule. Often he is the only person who knows all the facts.

The Committee's failure to rule against Tiger during the game is a pretty lame excuse for invoking Rule 33-7, IMO.
