I'm very confident that no personal favoritism was involved. (It's also not clear to me that any penalty points were assessed at this tournament.) I also think it's a bit churlish to begrudge the director and others some social interaction and time away from the hotel, even if an error in judgement was involved. This sort of attitude is not likely to encourage this (and perhaps other would-be directors) to host future events. In the not-so-long run, the BG community will suffer.
