Delay = faster pace of play = more fun

I am not suggesting a speed game just a reasonable time.
The problem with no delay is that the extra time required on the clock slows down tournaments too much.
Without a delay, the first game of a match might be played quickly because nobody knows yet how long the match will be. But as soon as one or two multipoint games are scored, the players will start slowing down. It is only for the very longest matches that players will have to keep up a high pace of play for the entire match.
With a built-in delay for each move, you can have with very tight time limits and a fast pace of play for the entire match. That's one of the things people like about backgammon over chess.
