In Response To: Favorable Review of Tournament in Atlanta (Phil Simborg)

(Directed at many responses, but you started all this, Phil, so it made sense to me to attach my reply to your post.)

As often happens here, threads initially with one intention have gone off on a tangent with (IMO) unwarranted piling on criticism at a directorship which possibly made an error in judgement. The error (if there was one) isn't unique to this director or this tournament and it actually exposes an inconsistent practice that is spread across at least two continents.

The outstanding question is "when should the 'clock' that determines penalty points for matches start ticking?" If anyone has attended a tournament where this is consistently, transparently, and uniformly applied (and where its practice is announced/advertised to all participants) then we would all benefit from hearing about it.

I don't (think I) know the current directors of the Atlanta tournament but it appears as though they're doing something right, given that this tournament (recently in the morgue) is growing in attendance. I emphasize that the current practice in the US of handing out penalty points is (in my view) not a clearcut practice by any means.

Let's move forward in a positive, constructive manner and dispense with searching for and punishing scapegoats.
