Calcutta.... one step further

I have stated this many times, and advocated this for years. Backgammon tournaments should be all about the intellectual competition and winning points and gaining status and ratings and trophies as your reward. Not money.
Entry fees should be enough to cover the expenses of the director and give him enough profit to make it worth his while to run the event, plus something for the major association that keeps track of the records and sanctions the event (again, like bridge and chess). No money to the participants for winning.
However, there is a "pro" division...a higher level of players that, as with poker, are in it partially for the money and are in it to gamble. They should have either separate tournaments or separate events, but even there the emphasis should be on the points and status and the money should all be in the side pool for those who wish to gamble.
So we can have the same kind of tournaments and events we have no, with no emphasis on money for the lower divisions, and the only money in the Pro division is in the side pool and not in the entry fee.
As for the calcutta, I agree...get rid of it, or if you have it, keep it outside of the main event in a private pari-mutual.
