Defending vs. a 1/3 backgame

It's interesting that in defending backgames, 'fear' seems to be a driving force for many (including me). I fear opp getting the timing he needs to pull off the backgame win. I fear opponent picking up two blots, making his 4-prime (or even 5-prime) and winning PvP. Are we so fearful of backgames (both sides) because we don't trust the bots to lead us down the winning path?
My approach is to try and make the full prime. That strongly argues against plays like 10/5 and 13/8. Before reading the comments I chose 18/16*/11 but here the fear of getting two sent back (and then losing PvP) had an influence. 18/13/11 (no hit) may be better, but that play caters to the fear of giving up the timing he needs.
One thing I don't fear is being wrong. If that were the case I'd be popping multiple Xanax everytime I posted an opinion out here.
18/16*/11
