What I mean, and what I think other's mean, by "it helps that opponent's timing" is that the variations in which it helps the opponent's timing outweigh the variations in which it doesn't.
I haven't studied this systematically but my general impression is that hitting on the opponent's side of the board usually helps the opponent's timing in this sense whereas hitting in our own outfield usually hurts the opponent's timing. But obviously the transition point is a bit fuzzy and will depend on other features of the position.
