Judgement Calls in Nactation
As the Nactation Key for 64S-21H-51 shows, the position in Timothy’s original post can be described equally well by these three move sequences:64S-21H-51d-61 = 64S-21H-51S-61 = 64S-21H-51Z-61
When you consider that 64S-21H = 64S-21D, there are three more:
64S-21D-51d-61 = 64S-21D-51S-61 = 64S-21D-51Z-61
None of these is wrong. As a nactator, you will develop your own style and preferences as you gain experience with the system. The primary reason there are multiple ways to nactate a given position is so that a nactator can choose the one that seems most natural to him for the position.
That said, most will find that 21H (Hit) is the way they like to nactate the play of 13/11 8/7* on the second move. H (Hit) tells you everything you need to know about the play, while 21D (Down) requires a moment’s reflection to discern that a hit has been made.
A minor controversy among nactators is the choice between S and Z offered by the Convenience Clause. The preference shown by Nack Ballard is the one I follow. Unless there is a contextual reason for using Z, perhaps because a comparison is being made with Z in a related position, he uses S.
In the case of Timothy’s position, I have a slight preference for 51S over 51d. First, of course, is my general bias against lower case letters. In addition, there is also a tendency for me to avoid using Nactations that require invoking the exceptions for forced moves and plays that enter from the bar. More and more, when I choose to use an areal family rather than a style family, I find myself using the areal Nactations that describe precisely how both (or, in the case of doublets, all four) dice are played in a move.
Combining all this, I come to 64S-21H-51S-61 for the move sequence in Timothy’s original position. I have placed it in the subject line of this post so it can by found by a search engine later.
