As my phrase "wreck a nice beach" suggested, a large part of what makes Siri remarkable is its robustness in recognizing speech across a relatively wide range of accents and subject matters. Speech recognition is not in any meaningful sense a "lookup engine."
As for the question-answering ability, to anyone who thinks that it's easy to automate the process of looking up answers to natural language questions, I recommend reading a bit about Watson's performance on Jeopardy!. Google "DeepQA project" or Stephen Baker's book Final Jeopardy. Note for example that the IBM team's baseline for performance was to use a conventional search engine, which basically sucked at the task of playing Jeopardy!
