Joe, in answer to your question, since you were both late, you have violated the rules and held up the event. I think if I were the TD I would say that it would be unfair for your opponent to win the match on the basis of your being late if he was also late, so I would have given you both a 1 point penalty IN YOUR NEXT MATCH. That also rewards the rest of the participants who may have been delayed because your match may have taken longer to end as a result of your lateness.

But more important, by assessing the penalty we have done two things:

1. We have followed the rules of the tournament. If we choose not to follow the rules and don't penalize for lateness, then what other rules should be discarded arbitrarily? If the rule is too harsh, then CHANGE THE RULE.

2. By assessing the penalty to you and your partner, now you, and all others in the tournament know that the rules will be followed, and you are much less likely to be late in the future. It is not a punitive measure, it is preventative. That is why people get speeding tickets...to stop people from speeding. (If the fines were 10 X larger there would be no speeding and many lives saved by the way, but the legislators and police care more about their income than saving lives.)
