1) Is the quote from Vogue that Tom posted referring to matches that light cigarettes/etc.? That is my impression.
2) My guess is that the colors have different value, ala poker chips. So in the eBay set, for example, White represents 1 point and Red carries a higher value (5?). It appears as though the eBay set has considerably more white "matchsticks" than red.
