As long as we're not beating around the bush, there is a very simple reason why there is so much resistance to your suggestion:

Your assessment of the situation is wrong!

There are several reasons that clocks are a good idea for backgammon. Keeping control of how long matches take is only one of them.

Think about the differences between chess and backgammon. No, I mean really think about them. If you honestly consider what you can say about how a game of chess plays out, vs how a game of backgammon does; and if you seriously think about how you would manage time in chess vs how you would in backgammon; and if you are open-minded about what everyone has been trying to tell you; I don't see how you cannot see that a delay is necessary for backgammon.

As for being a sissy rule, if you time out at backgammon, you lose. Just like chess. With the current rules, I agree that it's tough shit if you time out. There is no reason why you should. With your suggestion, it's very difficult to spend any time at all on tough decisions early in the match because you have no idea how many moves you will have to make later on.

I never have and never would time out at chess, either. There is no excuse for it. Who can't slap the pieces around the board 40 times in 90 minutes?? Talk about a sissy rule! Does that mean time controls in chess are broken?
