This board looks terrific. I have always had a problem when the checkers are the same colors as the points as sometimes they blend in and you miss seeing a checker. One solution is to use the dimpled checkers which given them more texture, and I also believe it makes them easier to move. Another is to use checkers with some swirls or design on them to help them stand out against the points. And of course, another is simply to have checkers that are not the same colors as the points.
I know that going with different colored checkers can big risky, giving a look with too many colors, but the key is to select colors that don't clash.
Again, that is my only problem with the board pictured....it looks very fine otherwise, but of course, when buying a backgammon board there are many other things I look at closely and want to know. I have owned and do own many boards, and I really don't think people consider some of the key issues when they buy one.
My short list, aside from aesthetics and size and price include:
1. How do the dice move on the playing surface? The dice need to bounce a little, but not too much.
2. How does the playing surface feel to the touch?
3. How does the playing surface wear, and is it easy to keep clean?
4. How heavy is the board. (I don't like too light or too heavy.)
5. How sturdy is the hardware...will the handle and latches and locks hold up over time.
6. How does the handle feel when you carry the board?
7. How attractive is the outside of the board?
I really think it is hard to know you are buying a board you like without looking at it, or one made by the same board maker, before you buy it.
Of course, I play a lot more live backgammon that most and my boards get a lot of wear and tear in chouettes and travel, so I am sure many of the above issues are not that important to some people.
I do know this: backgammon is a great game on just about any board, but it really is far less fun on a bad board and far more pleasant on a really good one. So if you play a lot and you have been using a cheap or terribly old board, once you invest in a really good one it is well worth it.
