According to what I understand, the most efficient way to study alone can vary a lot depending on your level. If I was to start again from the beginning I would combine playing with a bot and reading books at the beginning. While i would play with a bot, I would not try to save and categorize my errors. A good reason for this, is that after I finish all the reading I would expect my errors to be quite different from those that I would make before the reading.

First i would read Paul magriel's book "backgammon". Then I would subscribe at gammon village and read Walter trice's entire boot camp column (it later became a book). At gammonvillage you can find many many more valuable articles, but I would avoid reading something not for my level as it is not very efficient. Then I would try to find another book for intermediates. I have not read the book "understanding backgammon" from which Igor posts positions here, but i have not read a third book for intermediates that is as good as the previous two anyways and it looks to me that this book has considerable insight inside it and it has intermediates as its target audience, so i would give it a try.

During all this reading, I would still continue playing with a bot and try to understand my mistakes. After all this reading, I would simply reread those 3 books again. Only then I would move on to cycle 2 and read "what is your game plan" and "advanced ideas in backgammon" and a bunch of excellent articles from gammon village. Then I would reread everything in cycle 2 and after this I would not bother with mistakes of the past that I probably would not repeat now. From that moment and on I would track my errors and start trying to learn from them.
