OtB and two variations

I'm a total slacker regarding tactics and my attempts at backgammon progress are often best described as monkey-see-monkey-do. When we reached the posted position, I recalled frequently having seen XG hang back in similar positions, so I wanted to play 21/15 7/6. Klaus's argument that that leaves more shots failed to convince me. At the time, I assumed that he was superficially thinking 15 vs 14 shots, which was obvious even to me. Given the tactics of the position, it is actually more like 10 vs 5 shots, which might have convinced me.
I still don't feel confident about my understanding of, for example, the following two positions:
White is Player 2
score: 2
pip: 967 point match pip: 114
score: 0
Blue is Player 1XGID=--BBCBBA----b----bbccCab--:1:1:1:61:0:2:0:7:10 Blue to play 61
eXtreme Gammon Version: 2.10
White is Player 2
score: 2
pip: 977 point match pip: 114
score: 0
Blue is Player 1XGID=--BBCBBA----b----bbccCba--:1:1:1:51:0:2:0:7:10 Blue to play 51
eXtreme Gammon Version: 2.10
