I like this FT-system as well. But although I don't like giving byes to players with the best records, either, I wonder if it's better to distribute them randomly ("without replacement").

For as long as BG has been played in the modern era (say Oby's 1960's tournaments and forward) there has been a contradiction in admitting that BG contains a lot of randomness but then trying to reward players who have strung together a series of wins.

The FT-system does a great job in accepting the luck -- pairing players randomly instead of by wins. But then why not award byes randomly as well? Do the players with the most wins really deserve byes or are they just being rewarded for short-term luck?

I think it's unfortunate that the rules of tournaments have been (in general) written by the top layers, who have a bias in thinking that they (the top players) have been unfairly legislated against. This is another example that intelligence in one area (specifically being a good BG player) doesn't necessarily bleed over into other areas (forming equitable competitions). Being smart doesn't equate to being wise.
