Another thing that struck me, when comparing the games.

I found it easier to play chess blind, than I do backgammon.

I don't know if that's generally the case or if it's just me.

I suppose it has to do with the more volatile nature of the game, plus the fact that precisely the dice adds so much cardinality, so you don't look at the game as much of a natural flow, going from opening, to middle, to end play. But more erratic and changing strategies caused by the dice, not your own choice.
