Simulation

(2) For duration (number of rounds required), Format A had an advantage:
Format A used 12.82 rounds on average. Format B used 13.25 rounds on average.
Not a big difference, but it's not what I would have guessed (and it's not what Chiva expected either).
This is exactly what I had expected! And in fact I think it's very obvious, you didn't need a simulation to conclude that:
In a triple elimination format of N players, you need almost N x 3 losses to complete the tournament. This number is fixed (plus minus 1) no matter how pairings and byes are done. Each match always generates 1 loss, thus the number of matches needed is fixed, no matter pairings and byes.
All that's left, is to calculate how many rounds you'll need to complete this fixed number of matches. And here's the easy conclusion: The longer you can keep many players in the tournament, the more matches are played in each round, and the faster you get to the number of losses needed to close the tournament. Thus, rewarding byes to the players with most losses, will keep them longer in the tournament, and make the tournament complete faster!
