I believe these approaches which attempt to chart and categorize plays and differences mathematically can be tremendously beneficial in terms of providing insights into the decision-making process over the board.

To me, the greatest benefit of these studies is when the numbers are used to form reference positions and rules of thumb that can be remembered and applied with ease and confidence.

Not long ago Sly insisted that regardless of the bots, when you are playing humans you should always play GG or GS when there is a score difference, even slight. Of course he agrees that scores that should play like DMP at Crawford are exceptions.

While I see merit to Sly's thinking and would never completely discount the opinion of a true genius, I have always suspected they Sly's approach is at least a bit exaggerated. I think this thread and the studies referred to tend to prove that, or at least temper Sly's dictum.
