I assume you mean blindfold games. This claim strikes me as going too far. Let's look at a recent example for concreteness. Among Gareev's 33 opponents were two experts and three class A players; I'd consider them competent. I haven't looked at the games, but my guess is that at least some of them veered into non-standard lines fairly early. Blindfold players don't rely that much on their prior memorization of opening lines.
At the same time, not every GM is capable of playing simultaneous blindfold games. It does require a certain skill above and beyond conventional chess skill.
