The 2nd Giants of Backgammon Invitational starts this Thursday May 23rd.

That makes 18. Perfect for the format where we need a multiple of 6.
The official rules that the Giants Invitational will follow are the current ABT Rules. However, if I find a rule to be ambiguous I will refer to the Bower/Horton/Simborg set of rules for clarification. There are a few special rules that will be in place and they are as follows.
1. All matches will be legal plays only
2. If a die lands flat on top of a checker it will not be considered cocked.
3. Players are allowed by mutual agreement to play on a computer only if the match is also projected onto a screen/wall so spectators can watch. Evaluation and pip count must be turned off.
Below is the complete tournament format...
STAGE 1: BACKGAMMON OLYMPIAD The Olympiad will test various backgammon skills through a series of situational events. Players will accumulate points to qualify for Stage 2. Players will be eliminated from Stage 1 when it is no longer possible to earn enough points to qualify for the playoffs.
1. DMP
• Six double-match-point matches, two each vs. three different opponents
• Time control for each match is 3 minutes total reserve with a 12 second delay
• Each match is worth 3 points, for a total of 18 points possible
2. SpeedGammon
• Three 5-point matches, one each vs. three different opponents
• Time control is 2 minutes total reserve with a 10 second delay
• Each match is worth 6 points, for a total of 18 points possible
3. Score-based scenario #1
• Each player will play both sides of a 2-away, 4-away match against one opponent
• Time control for each match is 6 minutes total reserve with a 12 second delay
• Each match is worth 4 points, for a total of 8 points possible
4. Score-based scenario #2
• Each player will play both sides of a 3-away, 6-away match against one opponent
• Time control for each match is 9 minutes total reserve with a 12 second delay
• Each match is worth 5 points, for a total of 10 points possible
5. Standard Backgammon
• Two 9-point matches, one each vs. two different opponents
• Time control for each match is 18 minutes total reserve with a 12 second delay
• Each match is worth 9 points, for a total of 18 points possible
STAGE 2: -PLAYER PLAYOFF BRACKET
• The top eight players will advance from Stage 1 to a single elimination 8-player bracket in Stage 2
• The bracket will be seeded based on points accumulated in Stage 1
• Time control for each match is 18 minutes total reserve with a 12 second delay
• Each round will be a best two out of three 9-point matches
Stage 1 will be completed on Thursday May 23rd. The schedule for Stage 1 is tentative. Changes that occur will be dependent upon the actual time it takes to complete each session. All posted times are local to Chicago which is either CST or GMT -5hr.
12:30 PM DMP Session
2:15 PM 9-point Match
4:30 PM SpeedGammon Session
6:30 PM Dinner Break
7:30 PM Score Based Scenario Session
9:30 PM 9-point Match
Stage 2 will begin on Friday with the quarterfinals at 11:00 AM. The semi-finals will start after a short break. The final is tentatively set to start Monday, May 27th at 1:00 PM. It will start at 1:00 PM or as soon as both players are available. Matches will be streamed on the USBGF Ustream channel. Updates will be posted on the USBGF Facebook page and at BGOnline.org/forums.
