In both positions the 9 point seems a good asset and after 15/9 13/9 Blue, if not hit, can flexibly play the blot from the midpoint (after 15/5 Blue must blot with many numbers he's forced to play from the midpoint, or pile up spares on the low home board points). However, in your original White hits with 16 numbers, all of which give White positive equity. But in the variant only 61 51 and 11 give White positive equity, White won't hit with 33 54 or 63, and the 41 31 and 21 hits leave Blue the favorite because of his small racing lead and White's home board blot.
