In position one you need to leave yourself some aces that gain a crossover. How many is the question. 19/16 13/10(2) 8/5 seems like the right balance to me. This leaves 10 crossovers to save the gammon if I counted correctly, and you can roll two aces without missing.

Position two: I don't see any value in stopping on the 13 point here, so 16/10 8/5. Now playing 8/5 with the last three still leaves 5 crossovers (so it doesn't save a roll, it will just waste a pip), so I think 10/7 is probably best.
