Quarterfinalists get 1/8 of the prize fund. Thus if the round of 8 players hedged the entry fee the winner of the match is not guaranteed to even get the entry fee back.

Paying 1/4th of the field is more than enough.

" because the tournament directors don't seem to be willing to pay more places and let more people go away happy at a somewhat small expense to the top finishers (most of whom have hedged anyway.)"

Is it in the best interests of a player who leaves a tournament unhappy whenever there is not a cash to at least cover the entry fees to even enter tournaments in the first place?
