Prize structure

We have done this in the New England Backgammon Club with 2-4 levels. The first 2-3 were run by the club with the first two raked. The 4th level was a high stakes last-longer bet between two people. I like the system.
It is funny when you play one match and lose, yet win the expert prize pool because you got a bye, and all other experts lost in the first round. We have also had all experts get a refund from getting knocked out in the first round.
I don't like the idea of a free first tier. I have purchased shares of novices' winnings to reduce the entry fees, but I think it's bad if people who don't have any money at stake play people who do. Similarly, we've had chouettes with people simultaneously playing for $10, $5, and $0.25/point, but reducing that $0.25 to $0 would have felt wrong.
