Zare Race Database includes an effective gammon count database out to the midpoint. I think this is relevant for the second position, although it has a checker on the 16 point. I advanced that to the midpoint, but moved a checker from the 6 to the 9 point which will be played 9/6 in place of 16/13. This doesn't let you compare plays which leave the checker on the 16 point, but that looks bad to me in the second position. Here are the top 5 most efficient plays for saving the gammon:

25.570: 16/7 8/5

25.640: 16/13 10/4 8/5

25.876: 16/13 10/7 8/5(2)

25.888: 16/4

25.907: 16/10 8/5(2)

Since white has close to a 4-roll position, we are an underdog to save the gammon, but not terribly desperate. So, I think the most efficient play should be right.

Unfortunately, the database doesn't extend back to positions where you leave a checker on the 16 point, which feels right for the first position. 19/10 13/10 is the most efficient of the plays which start with 19/13, beating 19/10 8/5 by 0.114 effective pips.
