I have to agree with the main thrust of this comment. Having plenty of side events, and having a guaranteed number of meaningful games makes a big difference to me as well. Playing single elim tournaments and drawing a great opponent or getting bad luck in the first round is incredibly disappointing. Even double elim isn't all that great. I've one go and chess tournaments that almost always use some kind of swiss or mcmahon variant which involves everyone playing a full set of games. One may be out of contention for winning or prizes after two or three losses in these systems, but you still can play for place/rating, and most people stay to finish all their games.
