I think that because there's no explicit statement in the rules about what happens when a player hits the clock without rolling, it's an arguable point. I think your argument would win. But I think the rules would be improved by incorporating the "commonly accepted rules of backgammon" into the tournament rules -- much like the official rules of chess include the setup of the pieces, and how the bishops and rooks and pawns and horsies move.
