Cocked Dice: a Compromise?

IMO, The point of rerolling cocked dice is to avoid any ambiguity about what number was rolled. If a die is cocked significantly, then it may not be clear whether it should be considered to show a 3 or a 5, or whatever. You set the rule to reroll for *any* cocking, so that you don't get into arguments about a 10degree angle versus a 30 degree angle.
When the question is whether the die is flat or just barely cocked because it is hanging slightly over the edge of a checker, or touching a checker and a wall, I don't think it really matters much. If there is any real question about *whether* the die is cocked, then it must be sufficiently flat that which number should be considered showing is 100% clear.
Let's not lose sight of the *purpose* of the rules. If there is no ambiguity about the number, why should there be any need to reroll?
