9/3 9/8.

Keeping the 9 point as a blocking and landing point would often be a normal enough play. But if we played 8/1 here, how would we play 11 21 31 41 51 61 22 42 62 or 66 next roll? Of course, it depends on whether Opponent simply moves his spare, or clears one of his outfield points, but after 8/1 instead of 9/3 9/8, we often either lose the 9 point anyway, or end up with a more awkward position, or both.

We'd like to make the 5, 3 and 2 points. Putting a checker on the 1 now instead of on the 3 doesn't help that. And the 9 point doesn't seem to be otherwise very helpful. From the 8 point, we can usefully play 2s 3s 4s 5s and 6s, including most combinations with aces. 51 32 52 33 34 35 36 44 45 46 55 and 56 can be played from the 13 point. And for clearing the 13 point safely later, when we have two checkers there, the 9 point isn't going to help unless we throw a 54.

As for 8/2 4/3 or 8/2 6/5, I'm not concerned about leaving blots for one turn only, since we're not likely to presented with and want to hit an outfield blot on our next turn, but 3 blots not well placed (and with the spares for them on our 13 and 9 points) seem too many to clean up over our next few turns.
