Petter: Why is 13/9 11/8 D? I would've thought 13/9 13/10 was D.

Nice catch, Petter. You are right.

In the D (Down) family, all the checker movements in a play must land in the outer board. For this purpose, each die is considered independently.

In Onur’s position (shown above), the Down family contains these three plays:

  • D = 13/10, 13/9
  • d = 13/9, 11/8
  • D = 13/10, 11/7

By the More Points Convention, the two plays that make the 9pt rank higher than the third-place play 13/10, 11/7.

To decide which play ranks first, apply the 6pt Convention. In the outer board, the destinations of blots and spares are preferred when they are farther from the 6pt. By this measure, a blot landing on the 10pt beats a spare landing on the 8pt.

Incidentally, I learned recently that the order in which the three board areas used by the 6pt Convention are checked for blots and spares will be changed slightly when the new Nactation Tutorial is released. Here is the new ordering:

  1. Inner board — Closer to the 6pt is better.
  2. Outer board — Farther from the 6pt is better.
  3. Far side — Closer to the 6pt is better.
