10th Carolina Invitational: Option Base Pool and Equity Pool explanation needed

Please explain how the Base and Equity pools work.

By the way, I agree with Phil that allowing players to play both at the beginner and intermediate level without having to pay an entry fee is a great tool to promote the game.
