Beaver calculus

I doubled GNUbg in this money game and got beavered. Clear blunder, I now know. I write to ask what generally the correct beaver strategy is.
I note that I was a favorite to win and that my gammon chances were slightly better than my opponent's, so I was the favorite, right?
Having the cube has value, but that vigorish would at best make my opponent the favorite and not by much.
So, will appreciate an explanation or citation to material that explains the proper beavering strategy.
Thanks.
