You probably thought you needed to hit to win, and then thought your board was messy, etc. etc., but you have a race, as others pointed out. You might also have been afraid because of the 4 checkers back and the idea that you might leave shots when you jump one, but getting hit is not deadly (you lose in the race but increase contact and may hit returns).

Play it out a few times, and you'll see that your chances are still pretty good.
