In Response To: Score cards (Phil Simborg)
Love the score card. Would buy a bound book with preprinted pages like it.
I also agree with Phil that away-scoring is the way to go. Backgammon should be about checker play and cube action, not about who might make a mistake subtracting from 11.
Here is an anlogy to golf. On the links, scores are generally given relative to par. For example, “Phil is 3 under after 17,” and, “Rory is 2 under after 16.”
Opponents of away-scoring in backgammon might prefer that these golfers always use stroke count. In the foregoing example, we might have, “After 17, Phil 65,” and, “After 16, Rory 62.” Don't you think we should make Rory do the subtraction to figure out that he needs a birdie to catch Phil. Isn’t it cheating for Rory to use relative-to-par scoring instead of raw stroke count? Conversely, is Phil cheating when he can know that he does not have to try for birdie without showing his subtraction skills first?
