Also note that keeping 3 checkers makes the doubles of 11, 22, and 44 play worse. I am not sure that hitting chances would be that much less than the 5/36 you are worried about.

It is of course true for 22 and 44 but the parlay that has to happen combined with the overall difference in equity I believe is very tiny.
