Backgammon is not dying. From what I understand, once a board game reaches a specific level of popularity, then for many many many years it will continue to have a numbers of fans relevant to the initial size of its popularity. The key mechanic that guarantees this, is that the old generation has good memories/experiences of the game and teaches it to the new generation. From the moment that the popularity of a board game stabilises over the generationsyour takes an awful lot amount of work in order to make it more popular. I do not know personally the promotion for chess or poker you mention, but promoting a board game constitutes of many steps smaller and bigger most of which are initiations taken within the community of the game. Very few of those steps big or small are external.
