2nd roll 31

In a game someone played 62 as U ( in case my nactation is off: 24/23,24/18 ). I rolled 31. Double hit or just make the 5 point? Since it was a casual game against someone who doesn't play seriously, I went with the double hit for the fun of it. At the time I was sure the 5 point was correct but didn't care - but with more thought I'm not so sure. I know I can ask a bot, but I'm more interested in learning how to decide such questions than in the specific answer here. Any guidance?
