If the real live Greeks call it "portos" then maybe they are using a strange uncommon Greek dialect. It is the first time i hear or read the word portos. We have hundreds of dialects here, but still it is very impressive. The word in Greek is written "πόρτες" (portes). ε (e) is always pronounced as e in the word "medical" in English. There are no exceptions to this rule. I assume that you talk about real live Greeks immigrants in the U.S. Maybe they changed "Portes" and other words as years passed and made it portos where they live. Portes is a common word in Greek and it also means "doors", so I would not consider impossible a change of name for this word from immigrants.
