I completely agree. The earliest reference to “backgammon” was in England the early 17th century, describing it as new variation on the game of “Irish”. It appears that in the older game doublets were played twice rather than 4 times, and wins or losses were all counted as single points.

“Backgammon” was played over the next 300 years before codification in the USA (together with the “optional” use of the doubling cube). During this intervening period there was some significant variation in the treatment of opening rolls and bear-offs (both contact and non-contact). Moreover, triple game wins (i.e., backgammons) appears to be a 19th century addition. Almost all of the “traditional” variations (played in Iran and formerly Ottoman Turkish occupied territories) using the standard backgammon set up of pieces would have been consistent with this pre-codification variation in forms/rules.
