The derivation of Shesh Besh is interesting - this mixture of Hebrew and Turkish numbers. Shesh (or similar) for six is also fairly common in some Indo-European languagues (typically the Iranic, Slavic and Baltic families). Also many words for the number 5 are similar to Besh within these families(or more commonly Pesh). I had wondered if originally the name derived from one of the many Iranic languages/dialects and was adapted and modified slightly by the Ottoman Turks who introduced the game and its name to territories within its empire, which of course included Israel/Palestine until the latter part of World War I.
