US - How many people play backgammon?

In the 80's there were 40 million casual backgammon players in the US (versus 50 million for chess), according to US census data - there is a specific definition of casual play, something like 2 or 3 times a month.

I forget what the number is now but if you use a very loose definition of "playing" then it is probably at least 300 million worldwide based on the US numbers and what I know of the popularity in other countries.
