I think the issue is just why is one play better than another?

Bad plays can work, and they can work against bad players, but that doesn't make them somehow miraculously ingenious.

There are some very good reasons why making the 7 is better than making the 4 point. For instance it gives Black a terrible 55 and 44 and puts two checkers behind a 4 prime while retaining the option to later play rolls by blotting.
