"It is, ideally, the World Championship."
In actuality though it just happens to be the name of the tournament. There is no governing body and they just happened to grab that name first. If it bothers you consider referring to the tournament as the Monte Carlo tournament instead of World Championship.
"The objective should be to determine the best player. The current unseeded, random draw, single-elimination format is not the way to do it -- nor is it the way to even come close."
Agree. If it was up to me it would be a Swiss with 11 point matches with 4 or maybe even 5 losses needed for elimination with all matches clocked. Also VR results used though I know that won't happen any time soon.
" the additional matches could easily be accommodated. Matches should start considerably before the current 3 pm each day (perhaps, 10 am is more reasonable) and the very late (early morning hours) matches should be eliminated"
It sounds like you are more switching playing time around rather than increasing play time. Also Europe is different regarding what time they like to play.
