I'm not sure about #1. After all, your opponents are all in a bad mood too. :-)

But you may be right about #2. I've done simulations with Double Elimination format and found that it is harder to win the Second Chance (one loss) side than it is to win the Main (undefeated) side. In other words, the winner of the Second Chance is stronger on average than the winner of the Main.
