It looks like the best hitting play is H (Hit) = 13/10 6/2*. It dupes 3 and 4, and gives Blue a good 6 as well. Although it leaves 4 blots, it still looks better than hitting and stacking a 5th checker on the midpoint, with E (Each) = 16/13 6/4*. That inflexible alternative offers little chance for Blue to improve his position.

When you include the on-roll advantage, Blue will enjoy a 20-pip lead after this turn. Considering that lead, and also the fact that he is outboarded, launching a hitting war might be the wrong game plan. Quietly running to the relative safety of the 11pt looks more natural to my eye. White could not both hit and cover, so Blue will either get a good shot from the bar, or else have a useful builder for next turn.

In addition, White has only one builder within direct range of his 5pt, so Blue might get another shot at that blot next turn anyway. If White had another builder on his 6pt, Blue would have more reason to hit. The race would be closer, and the threat of White covering, and soon thereafter cubing, would be greater.

The 3 plays on the far side of the board, with the 2 coming down. Nactation-wise, that is the very definition of the Split family.

S (Split) = 16/11
