SHORT SUCKS

It is impossible to have short rules for tournament backgammon. I defy anyone to write a short set of rules where there will not be a tremendous amount of ambiguity and much left unsaid that would lead to serious conflicts and misunderstandings.
The more we let people know what the rule is, what the intent of the rule is, how it should be applied, and how infractions should be handled, and some illustrative examples, the fewer conflicts and disagreements there are. That makes for a fairer, more enjoyable tournament experience. And that is the reason for rules in the first place.
Now, there is a good argument for writing a very short rule, but attaching a more extensive guide to explain the rule and the application, but it amounts to the same thing. In order to have really good rules, they cannot be short.
