My intuition was similar for the match score - i.e. the slotting play provokes a cube. However, after either play it is a ND/T, though the slotting play leads to a ND by about 0.04.

So this doesn't fully explains the play - It is a ND/T (probably beaver for money) for all positions after either play.

I still don't fully understand why I should consider the slotting play.

An interesting point that may be worth mentioning for the 5a-2a score is that for many of white missing numbers, the slotting play leads to TG/Pass while the non-slotting play leads to TG/T. Not sure if it is relevant but I find it interesting.
